Chapter Ten

“So you’re with someone else now, huh?”

Zion put down the library books he’d been shelving, but he refused to look toward the reading room’s entrance. Seriously. Could he not get a few days of peace to adjust to the thought of his ex living here again? It’d been half a day. Half a day where he’d purposefully stayed back in the caves, as far from the parts of the town Perry knew as he could manage.

But somehow, Perry had found him already. And he’d managed to do so when Mystery and Max had gone for a short walk to the bathroom. Max had been their constant companion now that Mystery was under even more guard.

Zion really hadn’t wanted to be alone for this confrontation, but he had no choice. He turned around slowly.

“Hi.”

Perry had gotten buff. That was Zion’s first thought as he spotted the man leaning against the wall. He’d added quite a bit of muscle, his blond hair had gotten cut short, and he’d gotten eerily tan at some point. How did one get tan in prison?

Nope. Zion did not want to know.

Perry had oozed sex before he’d run off and gotten himself arrested. Now he was practically drenched with it. Zion’s gut flopped. He wanted closure. He wanted not to get involved. He wanted to move on to someone a lot less complicated and a lot more caring.

Like Vin.

Zion scowled and turned away again.

“You don’t look too happy to see me.”

“Why would I be? Last time I heard from you, you said you were going to go to rehab and come back to me clean and sober. Look how that turned out.”

“But I came back. Clean and sober. Didn’t lie about that.”

“No, but you lied about so much else.” Zion sighed and picked up another book. Maybe the repetition of the mindless shelving would ground him. The book was one he’d bought with Max in mind before he ever knew Max and Perry had slept together. Max loved it and read it at least once a year now. Zion clenched the cover and willed himself to be strong.

Perry stepped over to Zion—far closer than Zion wanted. He didn’t like being within touching distance of anyone most of the time. And he really didn’t want Perry to be the one in his personal bubble. Especially when nobody else was around. “I know. I’m sorry. I was getting bored.”

“I don’t care.” But Zion did. He’d cared so fucking much, back when he’d first found out.

“I’ve always gotten bored easily. It’s what always got me in trouble.”

“Well then, good thing you don’t have to deal with me anymore.”

“That wasn’t what I wanted, you know.”

Perry sounded so soft. So hurt. So fucking fake. Zion slammed the book down and whirled on Perry. “I don’t need this. I don’t need your half-assed apologies or your fucking intentions messing with my life. You cheated on me with at least three other people—one of whom was a friend who also had no idea you were seeing other people.
